RICH GIRL POOR BOY
Mercy was stranded in the busy Westlands suburbs and all she could think of was Terry. Unleashing her latest Motorola L9 mobile phone she sent an urgent flashback. Immediately her phone rang and there was her ride home.
Mercy couldn’t help noticing Ted at the passenger’s seat blacked out cold. Wondering what he had drunk she continued with her updates with Terry. Terry’s daughter Mya had been sent to her grandma’s place so they could all go sleep over at her place.
Times had truly changed for Terry and her daughter Mya.Down the road no one had thought that Terry was going to hitch another guy so soon
It seems like yesterday when Terry, her family and friends had gathered at the JKIA airport escorting her as she was heading to the USA for her further studies. We, her best friends had agreed her not to mention her pregnancy to her family on condition that she would tell them as soon as she landed in New York. True to her word, upon her arrival the news was officially disclosed to her parents who as if on cue urged her to return. Her dad collapsed you see so her mother and three sisters needed her back home to help run the business empire.
It was about four months later that Mya was born and due to the expenses of raising a child in the US, Terry and Mya boarded a plane for home. Terry’s dad had a vast business empire so it was easy for her to continue with her studies and have a management position in her Dad’s business.
Unfortunately that’s how she met Paul.
He was a handsome driver who was responsible for the family’s daily transport. At first we were all smitten but he had eyes only for Terry and despite her mother’s furious attempts to stop this relationship Terry was struck.
She never told us about the fight though, we heard it from Mya.
This sweet innocent girl had witnessed just how brutal Paul was to her mother and wanted to help out. One Sunday afternoon we were having a get together when Mercy went to play with Mya by the swings.Mya was really sad and upon Mercy’s persistent inquiries, the story rolled out.
Paul was abusing Terry! He had taken control of everything, her ATM cards, her car and the house.
He would drop Mya to school and had even stopped working so he could drop Terry at campus then be on his way. As if that was not enough he told everyone that Terry was a serious alcoholic so that his family assumed he was taking “good care” of them.
We all had to do something but what?
Today marks four years since the Paul episode. It had been a struggle getting him out of our lives but most importantly out of Terry’s. As much as her family refused to help out we as her girlfriends had stuck by her knowing how weak we get when love is in our hearts.
So here she was, again with a new beau named Ted. He was a matatu driver plying the busy Westlands route. He was incredibly charming and had warmed himself into all our hearts but Terry had been cautious. Indeed she had.
But little good it did her. He swept her off her feet in no time. Mercy was the only friend she could confide in as the rest of us were tired of her shenanigans. The first episode was when Ted asked her for rent. That was all we needed.
Sooner than you could say “broke ass” he had moved into her plush apartment and Mya deported to her grandma’s. That was about all we could take of him.
So tonight Mercy was on her own. She decided to do the only thing left to do, take charge of the situation. Day in day out she had witnessed how Ted and Terry drunk hard liquor as if there was no tomorrow. Asking Terry to give her the car keys, she quietly drove them to the rehab centre. Hoping this would be a perfect solution to her best friend and her hopeless boyfriend.
